OPEN GYM.
We are excited to be starting up an OPEN GYM for our older grades, 3 and 4 starting this February. The gym will be open at some noon recesses for intramurals and/or sports and games, from 12:20 - 12:55pm.
One of our exciting new initiatives this year has been to help improve Physical Literacy in our children. We want to help our kids increase their FUNdamental movement and sport skills and learn some key skills needed towards long term athletic development.
"The learning and practice of fundamental movement skills is the basic building block for the development of physical literacy. Much like learning the alphabet and phonics are the fundamental skills needed to eventually read Shakespeare, or, identifying numbers and learning to add and subtract are the fundamental skills needed to eventually balance a cheque-book, the development of fundamental movement skills, and fundamental sport skills, is critical if children are to feel confident when they engage in physical activity for fun and for health, or for competition and the pursuit of excellence.
Research shows that without the development of physical literacy, many children and youth withdraw from physical activity and sport and turn to more inactive and/or unhealthy choices during their leisure time."
Children tell us that not having the skills to play is one major reason they drop out of physical activity and organized sport.
WE NEED YOU!
In order for OPEN GYM to be effective, we will need much help from our able parent body. We are looking for any parent (skilled or not) to come and volunteer for one noon hour shift or even up to eight shifts if you like. You will need to supervise the kids and/or set up the sport or game for that time period. Lauren Lan will be coordinating this adventure, so you will not need to come up with the sport, it will already be planned for you. We will also be offering some optional wide games out on the field, and need some parent volunteers to help supervise as well. If we have enough parents, we could offer the outside games available to the younger grades as well. The kids will love it!
We will be having a volunteer meeting with Lauren Lan at the school Wed. 19th at noon OR if you can make the Wed 19th at 7:30pm. Please email Lauren Lan at lauren_lan@yahoo.ca or call at for more details.
